After beginning with renowned lawyers Jacques and Gilles de Billy during his studies at Laval University in the 1970s, Me John T. Pepper Jr. followed in the footsteps of his mentor Gabriel Lapointe, who asked him to represent as his first client his brother Jean Lapointe, a well-known Quebec singer and comedian who later became a senator in Ottawa.

Me Pepper, founder of the firm Pepper & Associates in 1983, now Pepper, Villeneuve-Gagné, has more than forty (40) years of experience before civil, administrative and criminal Courts, having pleaded before various judicial authorities, namely numerous provincial Courts around Canada including the Court of Quebec as well as the Superior Court of Quebec, the Federal Court of Canada, the Court of Appeal of Quebec and the Supreme Court of Canada.

An experienced lawyer, his practice of law has led him to be involved in several high-profile cases through the years.

The main foundation in the setting up of his firm was to be able to serve clients whose legal problems were based on the same facts that could be litigated in both civil and criminal courts.

Today, together with his partner Me Thomas Villeneuve-Gagné, he represents police chiefs throughout the province of Quebec. His cases lead him to litigate before disciplinary, civil and criminal courts.

Former Mont-Tremblant police chief Michel Ledoux is the perfect example of this. He was acquitted after a lengthy jury trial on charges of intercepting private communications and being in possession of instruments to do so, and his dismissal was subsequently overturned by a three-judge panel of the Court of Quebec.

In addition to representing the Kanesatake Band Council for many years before and during the Oka crisis of 1990, he most recently successfully defended Victor Bonspille, the newly elected Grand Chief of the Kanesatake Band Council accused of sexual assault who was acquitted.

In addition, his practice has led him to defend several well-known personalities, including:

  • Gordon Sawyer, a Radio-Canada journalist who was unjustly accused of criminal acts and who was acquitted, leading to the creation at the time of a movement advocating the rights of fathers (Men in Distress) whose rights of access to their children had been violated;

  • Myriam Bédard, an Olympic medalist accused of kidnapping, successfully discharged;

  • William McCulloch, mayor of the city of Lachine, acquitted of fraud.

He still to this day represents individuals as well as their corporates entities and is available to advise them wherever they may be active in the world.
